Whether you're planning annual family photos, celebrating a milestone, or simply want to capture a beautiful season of life, you don't have to travel into Chicago to find the perfect backdrop. The western suburbs are filled with picturesque parks, gardens, and scenic riverwalks that offer gorgeous settings year-round.
From blooming gardens in the spring to colorful fall foliage and golden sunsets, here are some of my favorite places to take family photos in the western suburbs.
If I could recommend just one location for family photos, St. James Farm would be at the top of my list. This DuPage County preserve offers an incredible variety of scenery, including white fences, tree-lined paths, open meadows, charming barns, ponds, and wooded trails.
It's especially stunning in late summer and fall when the prairie grasses glow during golden hour. Because the preserve is so large, it's easy to find quiet spots even on busy days.
Best for: Rustic charm, golden hour sessions, fall colors, and large family portraits.
Hurley Gardens is one of the western suburbs' best-kept secrets. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, this small garden feels like a hidden oasis with elegant pergolas, colorful flowers, winding walkways, and beautifully maintained landscaping.
Since it's more compact than many parks, it's an excellent choice for families with young children or grandparents who may not want to do a lot of walking.
Best for: Spring and summer blooms, intimate family sessions, maternity photos, and multigenerational portraits.
Cantigny is one of the most beautiful photography locations in DuPage County. The formal gardens, fountains, stone pathways, mature trees, and expansive lawns provide countless backdrops in one location.
One of the best things about Cantigny is that every season offers something different. Spring tulips, vibrant summer gardens, colorful autumn leaves, and even winter architecture make this a year-round favorite.
Keep in mind that professional photographers may need to obtain a photography permit before your session.
Best for: Elegant family portraits, engagements, anniversaries, and milestone photos.
Lake Ellyn is a classic western suburb destination for family photos. The historic boathouse, walking bridge, peaceful lake, and mature trees create timeless scenery that never goes out of style.
Fall is particularly breathtaking here as the colorful leaves reflect across the water, but the park is beautiful in every season.
After your session, it's easy to stroll through downtown Glen Ellyn for coffee or ice cream to make a day of it.
Best for: Waterfront photos, holiday cards, and classic family portraits.
The Fox River provides one of the most versatile backdrops in the western suburbs. Between the St. Charles and Geneva riverwalks, you'll find charming bridges, flower beds, riverside paths, historic architecture, and beautiful waterfront views.
These towns also offer countless opportunities for candid family photos while exploring local shops, grabbing ice cream, or enjoying a walk along the river.
If you're hoping for a lifestyle-style photo session that feels relaxed and natural, this is an excellent choice.
Best for: Candid family photos, engagement sessions, and seasonal downtown charm.
Fabyan Forest Preserve offers an incredible mix of natural beauty and historic character. The Fox River, Japanese Garden, covered walkways, stone structures, and iconic Dutch windmill create a variety of unique backdrops within one park.
Every turn seems to offer another photo-worthy location, making it a favorite among local photographers.
Best for: Families looking for a mix of gardens, river views, and historic architecture.
If you're hoping for colorful spring photos, it doesn't get much better than Lilacia Park. Famous for its tulips and lilacs, this park bursts with color each April and May.
Brick pathways, blooming flower beds, and decorative gardens make every direction camera-ready. Because it's so popular during bloom season, consider scheduling your session on a weekday if possible.
Best for: Spring family photos, Mother's Day sessions, and floral backdrops.
No matter where you choose, a little planning can make all the difference.
If you're dreaming of rustic fields and beautiful sunsets, choose St. James Farm.
Love flowers? Lilacia Park is a fantastic option. Love architecture? Head to Hurley Gardens or Cantigny.
If waterfront views are more your style, you can't go wrong with Lake Ellyn or the St. Charles and Geneva Riverwalk.
And if you want a little bit of everything—gardens, history, and scenic river views—Fabyan Forest Preserve is hard to beat.
No matter which location you choose, the western suburbs are full of beautiful places to preserve your family's memories. Sometimes the perfect backdrop is closer than you think.
