The Ultimate Fall & Halloween Guide to the Western Suburbs of Chicago

Lifestyle

There’s something special about fall in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. The leaves start to change, downtowns fill with pumpkins and decorations, and communities across the area come alive with festivals, trick-or-treating, family events and plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy the season.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly afternoon, a festive date night or just an excuse to embrace everything fall has to offer, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Here are some of the fall and Halloween events happening throughout the Western Suburbs in 2026!

One of the quintessential fall traditions in Wheaton is Pumpkin Fest at Cosley Zoo.

Throughout the entire month of October, Cosley Zoo is filled with thousands of pumpkins, along with apples, gourds, cider, cornstalks and straw bales. You can visit the animals, pick out seasonal decorations and enjoy the beautiful fall atmosphere.

There are also special activities throughout the month, including a daily scavenger hunt and Saturday face painting. Pumpkin Fest runs October 1–31 from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

🍁 More Ways to Enjoy Fall in the Western Suburbs

Of course, you don't need a special event to enjoy fall around here. Some of my favorite ways to make the most of the season include:

  • Taking a walk along the Naperville Riverwalk while the leaves are changing

  • Exploring the trails and gardens at Cantigny

  • Visiting a local farmers market for apples, pumpkins and other seasonal goodies

  • Grabbing a coffee and strolling through the downtowns of Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Geneva, St. Charles or Naperville

  • Finding a local pumpkin patch

  • Taking the kids on a weekend afternoon to a forest preserve

  • Supporting local shops and restaurants during the busy fall season

  • Getting outside for a family photo session while the trees are at their peak

🧡 There’s No Place Like Home in the Fall

One of the things I love most about living in the Western Suburbs is how much each community embraces the season. From pumpkins scattered across the lawn at Cosley Zoo to scarecrows throughout downtown St. Charles, glowing jack-o-lanterns in Geneva and trick-or-treating with local businesses, fall is a great time to get out and experience the communities that make this area so special.

If you're already lucky enough to call the Western Suburbs home, I hope this guide gives you a few new traditions to add to your fall calendar.

And if you're considering making a move to the Western Suburbs, fall is a pretty great time to explore the area and get a feel for what makes each community unique.

Happy fall, Western Suburbs! 🍂🎃
